Ethnic cleansing in genocide: Eelam Tamils in 1970-1990
Abstract:
The definition of genocide has emerged around Hitler’s atrocities against the Nazis during World War II. In this context, the descriptions of genocide are only a conversation centered on a war aimed at destroying an ethnic group. On the other hand, the removal of an ethnic group from its territory and the systematic destruction of an ethnic group’s identity are distinguished from genocide. As a result, many national ethnic groups are gradually being destroyed by a powerful force. The genocide debate on the Eelam Tamils has been built around the Mullivaikkal region in the final war of 2009. However, its history is long. The Eelam Tamils have been driven from their territory under the guise of ethnic riots. Genocide is not a planned, sudden act of oppression that occurs on a specific day. It is a series of various forms of oppression that are carried out gradually over a long period of time by one oppressive society on another. In order to explain this, this research article establishes the genocide committed against the Eelam Tamils in the period between 1970-1990 under the guise of ethnic riots. This study has primarily adopted the empirical research method. Based on this, this study has been conducted as a descriptive analysis using secondary data and contemporary media reports as data. The genocide against the Eelam Tamils has been staged in a series under the guise of ethnic riots even before Mullivaikkal.
